The NOST is a different type of chess/game club...build up over many years by word of mouth and recommendation.
Chess is a part of the NOST, so are Chess Variants and Non-Chess Games (Checkers, Secret Words, Pigs and Bulls...and More!). All are covered in articles, ladders and games in NOSTalgia, the bimonthly magazine of the NOST.
But most of all the NOST are people. People talking, interacting and enjoying the camaraderie of the games. Every year this culminates in the gathering of the NOST at NOSTvention.

CLUB HISTORY. NOST was started in March, 1960 by Robert Lauzon of
Pittsford, NY, and Jim France. They played in other clubs which emphasized winning much
more than friendship and conversation, and wanted to change that, so they began a league
of their own. Mr. Lauzon directed the club and its growth until around 1985.
Chess is the main game, although over time other games began to engender a following in
NOST as well. The fields are known as "Chess Variants" (CV) and "Non-Chess
Games" (NCG). Chess Variants are games played on a chess board, with chess pieces,
but with modified or expanded rules or units; sometimes with expanded or diminished game
boards. NCG encompasses a wide range of other games, such as Checkers, Shogi, and Go, to
name a few.
NOST has conducted an Annual Chess Championship (AC) every year since its beginning. Since
1977, with the exception of a few times, a live convention has been held each fall
somewhere in North America, to give members a chance to meet their fellow opponents in
person and take part in tournaments, conversation, and casual games. (More information on
these can be found in supporting pages.)
